The legal team for Abderrahim El Akkouh – who died while being restrained by a police officer – have said his case should be treated as murder, following the release of a post-mortem report yesterday.
The autopsy certifies that the sole possible cause of death was asphyxia due to chest compression, as well as suggesting the possibility of a cervical hold, which obstructs airflow and blood circulation to the brain.
Forensic experts have classified the case as having a homicidal origin, indicating that the cause of death was neither accidental nor natural.
Mr. El Akkouh’s legal team have called on the Public Prosecutor to place the officer involved on remand, whilst it is determined whether he should face murder charges.
His death triggered a wave of protests in June following his death.
