Commemorations for the first anniversary of the Valencia floods begin today with a state memorial attended by King Felipe and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Meanwhile large protests demanding justice and the resignation of regional president Carlos Mazón over the regional government’s perceived mishandling of the disaster look set to continue, with further protests set to take place today.
The protests come after an emergency services coordinator testified in court about a significant delay in sending flood alerts during the disaster, which may have contributed to the loss of lives.
The alert was not issued until twenty past eight, hours after warnings were first raised.
The flooding left 237 people dead, with damage to the region expected to cost over €10.7 billion.
